About Yarra River Corridor

The Yarra River Corridor follows the course of the Yarra River, one of Victoria's most significant watercourses, flowing over 240 kilometers from the Great Dividing Range through Melbourne and into Port Phillip Bay. The corridor includes protected riparian zones, parks, wetlands, and forest areas that support a wide range of native flora and fauna, including river red gums, platypus, and various waterbirds. Ecologically important, it acts as a green lung for urban Melbourne while preserving critical biodiversity in the upper and middle reaches. Historically, the river is sacred to the Wurundjeri people, traditional custodians of the land, with numerous cultural heritage sites and ongoing indigenous-led conservation initiatives. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy walking and cycling along the extensive Yarra Trail system, kayaking and canoeing on calmer stretches, and birdwatching in secluded wetland habitats. Key landmarks within the corridor include the Warrandyte State Park upstream, the iconic Melbourne City section featuring parklands and botanical gardens, and the lower estuary wetlands. The corridor connects rural, suburban, and urban landscapes, providing visitors with access to nature, cultural history, and recreational opportunities close to metropolitan areas. Visitor appeal lies in the blend of natural beauty, accessible recreation, and living cultural heritage along one of Australia's most storied rivers.
